TRENTON -- The Trenton Thunder's mascot and bat dog, Chase That Golden Thunder, who entertained fans at the minor league team's ballpark for a decade until his retirement party on Friday died just days later, team officials announced today.
'Chase was such a tremendous part of the Trenton Thunder identity for more than 10 years,' said Thunder General Manager Will Smith. 'His presence at Arm & Hammer Park or in the community was the epitome of the wholesome family entertainment for which we strive.'
Chase was diagnosed with cancer in February and the annual night to celebrate his 13th birthday on July 5th was also turned into his retirement party complete with a video tribute. The Thunder is a minor-league affiliate of the New York Yankees.
Chase's bat-retrieving legacy lives on with his son Derby, who continues to be part of the Thunder's home game entertainment, as well as another son, Ollie, who is with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
'He's just a one-of-a-kind dog,' Eric Lipsman, Trenton Thunder senior vice president of corporate sales, with whom Chase lived said Friday night at the retirement party. 'That's all I can say. He lived for this. He just absolutely loved to be out there on the field.'
The first 2,000 fans at Friday night's game got a Chase bobblehead and fans were encouraged to bring dogs to the game.
Chase was diagnosed with a form of lymphoma - blood cancer - in February, and has been suffering from arthritis. He spent much of last week in the hospital and struggled during his appearance on the field at Friday's game.
The team asks fans wishing to honor Chase to make a monetary donation in his name to Trenton Thunder Charities (Trenton Thunder Charities; Chase That Golden Thunder; One Thunder Road, Trenton, NJ 08611) or a local animal shelter/pet rescue in their own community.
