Appalled residents at a Scarborough apartment complex say they've helplessly watched for days as an increasingly emaciated dog has paced on a feces-filled balcony without food or water, while animal agencies have ignored their calls and given them the run around.
The pit bull, its ribs protruding, has been on the seventh floor balcony at 410 McCowan Road since Thursday or Friday. Its owners are nowhere to be found.
On Monday night children were huddled outside the complex, crying and hugging as the pit bull weakened before their eyes.
"It's been on the 7th floor since about Thursday or Friday, it has no food, it has no water," explained angry resident Vanessa Flores.
"The owners haven't come home. We've made numerous attempts to contact the SPCA, animal control, the police, none of which have been able to help."
"When I personally contacted the SPCA...(I was told) it was a non-emergency," she said.
Residents has resorted to throwing food over from other balconies, a CityNews viewer revealed in an email.
A resident named Michelle said desperation is setting in.
"We were even willing to climb the balcony and try and get across to grab him and bring him over," she said. "We've called police, we've called animal control, we've called the fire department, we've called security, we've called housing, but no avail. Nobody will help get this poor dog from this balcony.
"And we're just asking for somebody to please come and help this dog because he's going to die."
Flores says she's disgusted by the lack of response for the suffering animal.
"You have these different agencies in place, and I'm sure they're getting government funding, and when you call you are getting the run around and nobody is willing to help, and that's all we need is help for this poor animal that is out there starving."
Police tell CityNews the Ontario SPCA has opened an investigation, although it's not clear when they will visit the apartment.
