GRODNO, 25 July (BelTA) - Belarusian dog experts are studying European experience in tracker dog training during an international seminar held in Smorgon District, BelTA learnt from media liaison officer of the Smorgon border patrol unit Alexander Kolobov. The seminar is held from 22 July to 2 August at a canine center of the Smorgon border patrol unit. The event is part of the cross-border project "Improving the effectiveness of dog services under border agencies" held in line with the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument between Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus. Partaking in the seminar are experts from the canine center under the State Border Guard College of Latvia and dog experts from Belarus. The participants are discussing up-to-date methods of tracker dog training which have been elaborated by dog experts of the State Border Guard of Latvia and the EU. They will also focus on training dogs to search for narcotic and psychotropic substances. The experts will share experience in involving dog experts and tracker dogs in border protection service. The cross-border project is being implemented in 2012-2014, its budget totaling €555,000. The project is mostly financed by the European Union. The goal of the project is to improve security, including at the borders, and bolster the effectiveness of border and immigration control and the work of investigation agencies in crisis situations. The project seeks to curb illegal migration, smuggling and human trafficking from both sides of the EU border. Besides the training, the project also stipulates acquisition of new tracker dogs, equipment and special transport.
